James Florio is a Montana-based photographic artist focused on the built environment and the life surrounding it. He works slowly whenever possible, visiting a place repeatedly to gain a greater understanding of it and to deliver a thoughtful and profound interpretation. He is currently working on several long-term projects documenting the unique changes of nature, climate, and time on architecture and landscapes. Using the camera as a means to investigate, understand, and document, he works primarily with large format film for its depth and deliberation.
You can see more of his work in various publications and books, including the four recently released books: Thirty-Six Views of Inverted Portal, Radius Books: Sticks, FOG, and the initial book from the MAS Context House Series: Sam and Ruth Van Sickle Ford House. As well as: Radical Logic, On the Work of Ensamble Studio, the Divisare Book set: Structures of Landscape, Gio Ponti in the American West, Kengo Kuma: Portland Japanese Garden, National Geographic Traveler, Domus, Architectural Record, Modern in Denver, and others.
He is currently an artist in residence at Tippet Rise Art Center in Fishtail, MT, and Grace Farms in New Canaan, CT. He was awarded the 2022 Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award.
